Career or Higher Education or Both?

Are you someone who is interested to study further after you have started your career? Do you have constraints that are stopping you from going for full-time studies? Do read here how our employee Shruthi Sagar managed to do his master's while working at Kimshuka as a full-time employee.

If you ask people about the most favorite phase of their life, most of them would vote as the time they spent during the degree for various reasons like friends, trips, parties, etc. I am no exception to this. I always love to study and listen to technical podcasts even if it does not have an immediate impact on my career. Inheriting the principles of trying to motivate the younger generation from my parents, naturally, I have a goal of having a career in the academic field. Listening to such podcasts and studying always helps me to guide my peers at work or juniors at college. With this interest in having a career in academics, I decided to pursue my Master’s Degree which is a mandatory requirement in universities. While browsing universities that offer degrees without taking a break from my professional career, I came across the Work Integrated Learning Program by BITS Pilani.

The program is made such that, we take consent from the organization, find a mentor from the same organization who is experienced in the domain we choose to do Masters. This helps both the organization and the student to know where the employee’s interest lies and how that interest can be utilized productively so that employee also does what he is interested in.

When I approached my manager at Kimshuka Technologies, he was very glad to support my dreams and passion and wholeheartedly accepted to be the official mentor throughout the course. From the day I started my course, I always had that ambiguity if I could complete my course. We would have regular discussions on what courses are being taught and if any of them could be implemented in our products. I was very well supported during the exams by giving enough time and additional resources for preparing.

During my final dissertation, we were supposed to pick a data science topic happening in our organization and apply at least a few of the topics that we had studied. Showing my interest in Real-time streaming and analytics, I discussed this with my mentor, and we did a use-case on Comparative study between Apache Kafka and RabbitMQ for Data Streaming which we used as a POC for one of our clients. I have written a detailed blog on the comparison which can be found here.

It is always hard to find people who support and motivates us in achieving our goals. It was indeed a fabulous experience to have my master's completed without giving any break to my work as well.
