"Role of UX Designer"

Rashmi Ravishankar

A UX designer's daily tasks are guided by the core stages of the UX process, which include research, design, and testing/validation. Accordingly, their typical responsibilities involve.

  1. Research

Research is the cornerstone of effective UX design, and its importance has grown over time. While AI streamlines tasks like wireframing and prototyping, research continues to require human insight and empathy—an aspect AI cannot replicate. This makes research one of the most demanding skills for UX designers

Types of UX Research:

  • Qualitative Research: Focuses on understanding user behavior, attitudes, and experiences through methods like interviews, usability testing, and field studies.

  • Quantitative Research: Involves measuring user behavior through data-driven methods like surveys, analytics, and A/B testing.

Some common user research methods are Interviews, Usability testing, Heuristic evaluation metrics analysis, and contextual inquiry.

Why Research Matters in UX:

  • Centers designs on user needs.

  • Identifies and resolves issues early.

  • Aligns user goals with business objectives.

  • Inspires innovation through unmet opportunities.

After analyzing user research and identifying problems, UX designers move to the design phase. This includes:

  • Flow Diagrams: Mapping user journeys and product structure using tools like Figma or Adobe XD.

  • Prototypes: Validating design decisions to avoid costly mistakes.

  • Wireframes: Finalizing designs to hand off to developers.

  1. User Testing

Design validation continues even after handing off wireframes. UX designers must regularly test and gather feedback through A/B testing, surveys, and usability tests to refine and optimize the user experience. Understanding the entire UX process and collaboration with the team is essential.

Here is a list of UX designer skills:

  • Wireframing & prototyping

  • Usability testing

  • Collaboration

  • Proficiency in tools like Figma and Sketch

  • Problem-solving

  • Empathy

  • Interaction design

  • UX writing

  • AI tool familiarity

  • Information Architecture
